(San Luis Obispo, CA) It was the 1989-1990 school year when parachute pants were cool, Milli Vanilli was at the top of the pop charts, and Bart Simpson first uttered “Eat My Shorts,” when college senior, sports medicine trainee, Dave Svetich, joined the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo athletic training staff. Fast forward 30 years and Svetich is now a doctor of physical therapy and co-owner of one of the newest physical therapy clinics on the Central Coast, Precision Physical Therapy and Wellness in San Luis Obispo. A native of Bishop, California and athlete in football, track and field, and wrestling, Svetich was attracted to the sports medicine field at Cal Poly because he endured an injured shoulder while wrestling and wanted to learn more about rehabilitation and recovery. Upon acceptance into Cal Poly, he participated in Rugby, Gymnastics, and Shorin- Ryu karate. The Cal Poly Athletic Training Program, when Svetich started, was headed at the time by Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame member, Steve Yoneda. “I have connections with Dave’s family and have kept tabs on his career,” said Yoneda, “It’s gratifying to see one of my former students achieve such success.” Over the past 30 years, Svetich has amassed extensive sports training in wrestling, football, track & field, rugby and martial arts. One of his dream assignments was as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for his favorite NFL team, the Los Angeles (Oakland) Raiders. “It is always great to see an athlete get back to their sport and compete at a top level. I get the same satisfaction seeing someone return to being able to perform their daily activities and do their routine exercise.” Dr. Svetich has gone on to learn treatments beyond athletics, from pediatrics to geriatrics. He takes great pleasure in helping all populations achieve their goals. Svetich has kept touch with his beginnings at the Cal Poly Athletic Training Program and its current director and head athletic trainer, Kristal Slover. Svetich, a frequent visitor to Mott Athletic Center at Cal Poly to watch his daughter, Lily Svetich, a walk-on sophomore member of the Mustang Women’s Basketball squad. “The Cal Poly Kinesiology major today has many exceptional pre-health profession students, some of whom we employ. Their enthusiasm and ‘Learn By Doing’ philosophy is unparalleled,” said Svetich. Precision Physical Therapy, Svetich’s newest clinic, which opened in July 2019 is co-owned with Dr. Kristen Carless. Both he and Carless are Doctors of Physical Therapy and Board Certified Specialists in Orthopedics. Carless is also a Cal Poly graduate. About Dr. Dave Svetich Dr. Dave Svetich works with pediatric to geriatric populations, as well as athletes from middle school age to the National Football League.
