(San Luis Obispo, CA) It was the 1989-1990 school year when parachute pants were cool, Milli Vanilli was at the top of the pop charts, and Bart Simpson first uttered “Eat My Shorts,” when college senior, sports medicine trainee, Dave Svetich, joined the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo athletic training staff. Fast forward 30 years and Svetich is now a doctor of physical therapy and co-owner of one of the newest physical therapy clinics on the Central Coast, Precision Physical Therapy and Wellness in San Luis Obispo. A native of Bishop, California and athlete in football, track and field, and wrestling, Svetich was attracted to the sports medicine field at Cal Poly because he endured an injured shoulder while wrestling and wanted to learn more about rehabilitation and recovery. Upon acceptance into Cal Poly, he participated in Rugby, Gymnastics, and Shorin- Ryu karate. The Cal Poly Athletic Training Program, when Svetich started, was headed at the time by Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame member, Steve Yoneda. “I have connections with Dave’s family and have kept tabs on his career,” said Yoneda, “It’s gratifying to see one of my former students achieve such success.” Over the past 30 years, Svetich has amassed extensive sports training in wrestling, football, track & field, rugby and martial arts. One of his dream assignments was as an Assistant Athletic Trainer for his favorite NFL team, the Los Angeles (Oakland) Raiders. “It is always great to see an athlete get back to their sport and compete at a top level. I get the same satisfaction seeing someone return to being able to perform their daily activities and do their routine exercise.” Dr. Svetich has gone on to learn treatments beyond athletics, from pediatrics to geriatrics. He takes great pleasure in helping all populations achieve their goals. Svetich has kept touch with his beginnings at the Cal Poly Athletic Training Program and its current director and head athletic trainer, Kristal Slover. Svetich, a frequent visitor to Mott Athletic Center at Cal Poly to watch his daughter, Lily Svetich, a walk-on sophomore member of the Mustang Women’s Basketball squad. “The Cal Poly Kinesiology major today has many exceptional pre-health profession students, some of whom we employ. Their enthusiasm and ‘Learn By Doing’ philosophy is unparalleled,” said Svetich. ![]() Precision Physical Therapy, Svetich’s newest clinic, which opened in July 2019 is co-owned with Dr. Kristen Carless. Both he and Carless are Doctors of Physical Therapy and Board Certified Specialists in Orthopedics. Carless is also a Cal Poly graduate. About Dr. Dave Svetich Dr. Dave Svetich works with pediatric to geriatric populations, as well as athletes from middle school age to the National Football League. He began his career as a certified athletic trainer, has applied and continually updates his education. He holds a B.S. in Physical Education from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo (1991), an M.S. in Physical Therapy from University of the Pacific (1995) and a Doctorate of Physical Therapy from Western University of Health Sciences (2009). Precision Physical Therapy staff celebrating one year of business while abiding by CDC guidelines. (San Luis Obispo, CA, July 21, 2020) This month marks the one year anniversary for Precision Physical Therapy and Wellness. Co-founded by Dr. Kristen Carless and Dr. David Svetich, the business began with a staff of only two physical therapists and has experienced significant growth over the year. With the addition of one physical therapist, seven physical therapy aides and two front office managers, the practice is thriving.
Co-founder Kristen Carless remarked “It is so exciting to see the progress that the clinic has made over the past year. When we started this business, it was just Dave and I and now with all of the staff and the amazing patients, we have created a family dedicated to wellness and reaching patients full physical potential.” Precision Physical Therapy continues to offer a “48-Hour Appointment Guarantee” after an initial phone call. It is at the utmost importance to the practice that the doctors sees a patient when they are experiencing pain, not weeks after. Precision Physical Therapy is also offering FREE 20-minute consultations for members of the community who are experiencing pain or injury. During these unprecedented times due to COVID-19, Precision Physical Therapy wants to ensure that any physical pain a person is feeling does not create any added stress. Free consultation appointments are available to anyone who has not previously been treated at Precision Physical Therapy, and the free consultation does not require a doctor’s referral. When asked about the inspiration behind implementing this service, co-founder David Svetich said, “We want Precision to be a place that our community members feel comfortable coming to for health and overall wellness. We want to provide the best care for our patients and local population so they can continue to be active, healthy, and live up to their highest potential.” Precision’s hopes for the future include expanding their team and their facility while continuing to provide personalized plans of care to every patient. PWR! Moves (Parkinson Wellness Recovery) exercise class.
The classes began after the realization that there were very few consistent exercises classes for people diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in the San Luis Obispo area. The goal is to provide a space for the local Parkinson’s community to stay active while having fun.
Dr. Carless became involved after working with Parkinson’s patients through Maria Allen, Central Coast Home Health’s San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara County Parkinson Coordinator. The two have worked together to create more opportunity for the Parkinson community. “There are very few Parkinson specific research-based exercise skill training programs dedicated to maintaining and restoring skills that deteriorate and interfere with everyday movements and function in the local area,” said Allen, “I’m extremely excited that Precision Physical Therapy owners, Dr. Carless and Dr. Svetich, have seen this need and are so welcoming to the Parkinson community.”
PWR! Moves offers a flexible and functional exercise plan for Parkinson’s patient that targets many symptoms and is easily adjustable based on disease severity. PWR! Moves are performed as large movements with focus on posture and high effort, meant to assist in mobility.
PWR! Moves classes are taught at 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday at Precision Physical Therapy and Wellness located at 211 Tank Farm Rd., Suite A (across from Farm Supply). The cost of the class is $15 per person or $20 for two people.
